Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus Director Doreen Rao Leads Open Rehearsal

BUFFALO N.Y., January 13, 2009 -- In her first educational outreach opportunity with Western New York’s musical community, Doreen Rao, the newly-appointed musical director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus, will conduct an open rehearsal on January 26, 2008 at 7:30 pm in the Wick Student Center at Daeman College. The event, titled “Sing! In-rehearsal…with the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus,” welcomes conductors, teachers and choristers of all abilities to sing choral music from Bach to Broadway while learning from a master choral educator known worldwide for her inspired musical technique.

“In my brief time with the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus I have been welcomed so warmly by the region’s musical community and truly recognize the talent that exists in Western New York,” said Rao. “It is my hope that an open rehearsal quite literally opens the door to educational and social opportunities that enrich us vocally as singers and encourages an active and vibrant choral community in the Buffalo-Niagara region.”

Doreen Rao is an internationally celebrated conductor, teacher and author who shares her vibrant and commanding conducting style each week in rehearsal with the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus. She was appointed Music Director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus this past fall and is currently leading the chorus to new levels of artistic growth in its 72nd season. In addition to her role as Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus music director, Rao holds the University of Toronto’s Elmer Iseler Chair in Conducting and conducts the MacMillan Singers and Bach Festival Singers, ensembles that collaborate with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. She is recognized as one of the world’s leading experts on children and youth choirs, has authored several books and has a long musical relationship with many distinguished musical conductors including Chicago’s Sir Georg Solti, James Levine and Helmuth Rilling at the Oregon Bach Festival.

“The Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus is fortunate to have a musical director with the experience and international reputation achieved by Doreen Rao,” said Bruce Keiser, president of the BPC Board of Directors. “This outreach with singers of all levels is just the first of many steps planned by the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus to enable singers to share their passion for excellent music performance with each other and with those who appreciate and support the many musical organizations in the Buffalo-Niagara region.”

The evening rehearsal will include works by Mendelssohn, Bach and Broadway composer Jerome Kern as the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus prepares for its spring concerts with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Pops concerts.
